If you have an employee who uses family or medical leave to play hookie, it might be worth it to do a little investigating of your own.

Recently an employer used surveillance video and a private investigator to prove a lawful termination of a worker who abused paid leave guaranteed by the Family and Medical Leave Act, according to Jeffrey Kopp, an employment attorney at Foley and Lardner. The worker had been diagnosed with lumbar degenerative disease, a chronic back condition that qualified him for intermittent FMLA leave for doctor appointments and flare-ups, Kopp writes.
