About 140,000 households will receive food stamps as the result of an approximately $76 million class action settlement approved earlier this year.

In August 2012, attorneys for food stamp recipients sued the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance for policies that, it said, resulted in the wrongful denial of benefits under the federally-funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The plaintiffs had received notices that they were being sanctioned for violating work requirements, but the notices did not include information about how they could avoid the sanctions.
