Pity the poor Federal Trade Commission. On the ultra-sensitive issue of the security of online consumer data, some companies say that the agency is trying to do too much, while other organizations argue that it isn’t doing enough. So now it’s asking groups for their advice.

Theodore Kingsley, a Washington, D.C.–based in-house counsel for AT&T, responded in a comment letter that the agency should trust industry to lead the way. But consumer groups like EPIC (formally, the Electronic Privacy Information Center) are urging the agency to do more—much more—to protect a computer user’s privacy.
