A defamation action involving two "notoriously outspoken and direct" public figures—former business titan Maurice "Hank" Greenberg and former attorney general and governor Eliot Spitzer—is inching toward a showdown, with the Spitzer camp filing a typically double-fisted response to the lawsuit late last week.

Spitzer is asking Supreme Court Justice Francis Nicolai in Putnam County to toss out Greenberg v. Spitzer, 1436/13, a defamation claim lodged in July by the embattled former leader of American International Group (AIG).
