Ex-Sidley Partner Admits Faking Bills, But Not for Gain

In a response filed Tuesday with an Illinois attorney discipline board, Chicago lawyer Lee Smolen acknowledges fabricating or otherwise improperly submitting $120,000 in expenses while at Sidley Austin, but insists he didn't do so to enrich himself. Smolen, now a partner at DLA Piper, is one of three attorneys with Am Law 100 ties coping with the fallout of their admitted misdeeds this week.

    The audacity of his defense (if you want to dignify it with that title) echoes and confirms the arrogance of his defalcation. But, sadly, that seems to be the culture they inculcate in big law now.

    And why doesn't Sidley have a comment on the matter? And why does DLA deem it acceptable? We can only guess, but all of the guesses lead to the invidious. Shame on them all.
