Private equity giant KKR & Co. announced Thursday that it has hired retired U.S. Army four-star general and ex–CIA director David Petraeus as chairman of its newly created KKR Global Institute.

Petraeus, who left the spy agency in November after acknowledging an extramarital affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell, emerged from a self-imposed seclusion in March by apologizing for his conduct during a speech honoring veterans at the University of Southern California. Earlier this month, USC announced that Petraeus would join its faculty—he’s also a visiting professor at the City University of New York.
