London-based Kennedys has hired Peter Cashin, the former Asia Pacific legal head for New York-based insurer MetLife Inc., as partner in its Hong Kong office.

At Kennedys, Cashin will advise on mergers and acquisitions, divestments, strategic alliances, licensing and regulatory compliances issues.

Cashin joined MetLife in 2010 from American International Assurance Co., the Asian spinoff of American International Group Inc., where he was chief legal counsel. He left AIA, along with several other senior executives, ahead of a planned sale of the company to U.K. insurer Prudential Plc. That deal subsequently collapsed.

Before he went in-house, he was a partner at U.K. firm CMS Cameron McKenna. He moved to Hong Kong with Cameron McKenna in 1998, to help the firm build its new office and lead the insurance practice.

Cashin is the eighth partner for Kennedys’ 30-lawyer Hong Kong office.
