Eight years ago, Bingham McCutchen and the New York chapter of nonprofit Say Yes to Education (SYTE) teamed up to provide legal services to the families of some 400 Harlem kindergarteners for the next 15 years. To assist in the effort, Bingham enlisted non-attorney staffers from its New York office—the first time the firm had employed non-lawyers in its pro bono efforts. Since then, about two dozen employees have taken part in the program, , says Jaimie Fried Dockray, Bingham’s senior manager of pro bono administration. Non-attorneys contribute by, among other things, working directly with students at a SYTE summer camp. This summer, secretary Glenda Campozano, secretary Karen Svoboda, and secretarial manager Eileen Franklyn volunteered at the camp, which mixes academic tutoring with sports and arts lessons. The Am Law Daily spent an afternoon at the camp, photographing Franklyn, who has participated in the project since it began, as she helped students create simple ink prints. “I’ve been with these kids every year since kindergarten,” she says. “It’s just fun watching what they do — the fact that they enjoy expressing themselves through art.”
