For Susan Manch, the project began like so many others in her 17 years as a legal industry consultant: A law firm-Bingham McCutchen, in this instance-approached her last spring seeking an outsider’s take on its attorney development programs.

But after Manch interviewed 35 Bingham partners, associates, and staff members, and analyzed other firms’ development efforts, she and her contacts at the firm felt Bingham needed more than a retooling of its training regimen. It needed someone to manage the program full time.
