The interactive scatter chart below was born of a simple question: How many women make partner in The Am Law 100 and Second Hundred these days? Aric Press, editor in chief of American Lawyer parent ALM, kicked off his January column
with that question. As it happened, having analyzed a pool of some 5,000 partners promoted since January 2008, Press had a pretty good handle on the answer: about three out of every ten. Armed with that 30 percent figure as a benchmarkand with this year's new partner season upon uswe decided to track how individual firms fared when it came to elevating women into the partnership ranks this year. Our chartwhich does not include an equity-versus-nonequity breakdownplots more than 1,000 partner promotions at more than 100 firms by percentage of women and total new partner class size. (Where two or more firms overlapped, we've made visual adjustments to the plot points.) The data we've collected so far confirm the new benchmark. We plan to update this chart as more firms announce new partners.
An analysis of newly promoted partners at some 100 Am Law firms shows that one out of three are women, that the Class of 2012's average path to partner was ten years, and that more and more lawyers are taking roundabout routes to their firm's top tiers. -- Sara Randazzo
