In January 2008 Bet Tzedek Legal Services approached Manatt, Phelps & Phillips about creating a national network of volunteers to help Holocaust survivors fill out reparation applications. The public interest group’s staff thought the project would be a good fit for a junior associate. Instead they got one of Manatt’s most accomplished and experienced lawyers: counsel Stanley Levy. And for Levy, who actually cofounded Los Angeles–based Bet Tzedek in 1974 with two other attorneys, the project has served as the culmination of a 46-year career devoted to justice, spirituality, community, and good music.
“The idea that we are responsible for each other has been an important part of my values, the values of my parents, the values of my religion, the values of my country, and the values of my profession,” says the 69-year-old.
