14. Cynthia Urda Kassis, Shearman & Sterling
Latin American Project Financings

, The American Lawyer

Even as credit markets tightened, Cynthia Urda Kassis helped close two of Latin America's largest project finance deals. As mandated counsel to lenders funding the GNL Quintero S.A. liquefied natural gas terminal in Chile-a $1.1 billion financing that has the potential to break Chile's dependence on Argentina for power-Urda Kassis and her team initially consulted with 16 banks. After it became apparent that no single lender could take on the risk of funding the project alone, Urda Kassis and company harmonized the competing needs of each member of the nine-bank club that emerged to fund the deal in June. Working with the derivatives side and lending side of each of the banks meant that Shearman had, in essence, 18 clients on one deal. (The developers were represented by Linklaters and Vinson & Elkins.)
