One of the old–line New York firms—it goes back to 1902—Chadbourne & Parke boasts well–regarded practices in corporate finance, litigation and arbitration, intellectual property, energy, project finance, and mergers and acquisition (particularly of the cross–border type). It is also one of those firms whose relatively low Am Law 100 rank by revenues doesn’t tell the full story. Chadbourne & Park rates far higher—closer to the middle of the pack—on profits per partner (well over $1 million), and average compensation per partner. Helping these figures, of course, is Chadbourne’s relatively small cadre of equity partners—around 80 in all.
Chadbourne did get hit during the economic downturn—revenues seesawed and some two dozen associates were laid off in March 2009. But it didn’t see the dramatic drops some of its Manhattan–based peers saw, and by the end of 2011, both revenue per lawyer and profits per partner were at firm highs.
The firm has also seen success in its diversity efforts. With about 18 percent of its U.S.–based lawyers—and nearly 10 percent of its U.S. partners—identifying themselves as minorities, Chadbourne placed twenty–eighth of 194 firms on The American Lawyer’s 2011 Diversity Scorecard. On the pro bono front the firm counts up to 100 hours toward an associate’s billable hour tally—a policy that has helped Chadbourne earn above–average marks on our pro bono surveys (it finished seventy–fourth of 200 firms in 2011, with lawyers averaging more than 53 hours).
Chadbourne may not have the dozens of offices some of its rivals do, but its footprint has been growing. New offices in Mexico City (2008) and São Paulo, Brazil (2010) are intended to boost Chadbourne’s presence in Latin America—in energy, project finance, M&A, and corporate finance work, in particular. Across the globe, the firm added a Dubai office in 2007 (again, focusing on energy, project finance, and cross–border transactions), an Istanbul office in 2011, and has other outposts in Moscow, Warsaw, and Kiev. And, of course, in Beijing—because you can’t be a major player in New York these days without looking toward China.

Proskauer Rose's big week in the real estate space continued on Friday as the firm grabbed a role advising investment firm Ares Management on its bid to acquire AREA Property Partners's $6 billion in assets.
