How convenient would it be if the next car you bought came “embedded” with the law? That is, you’d pull up to what looks like a parking space, only to be alerted that you risk a $150 ticket because you’re actually in a (poorly marked) no-parking zone.

That’s the world that Roland Vogl is trying to bring to life. He’s the executive director of CodeX, a center at Stanford University that aims to create technologies to make the legal system more efficient and accessible for lawyers and everyday consumers. I interviewed Vogl at the recent LegalTech trade show in New York that ALM owns and manages. “I feel like even the slower-adopting lawyers are now starting to embrace the field,” Vogl told me.
