When David Allgood retired as general counsel at the Royal Bank of Canada in February, he looked at his options. The former chairman of the Association of Corporate Counsel would have been a good catch for any of Canada’s largest law firms.

But Allgood chose to take an of counsel position with a relatively new name in Canada: Dentons, formed in 2013 by the merger of Canada’s Fraser Milner Casgrain with Europe’s Salans and U.K.- and U.S.-based SNR Dentons. A key factor in his decision, he says, was Dentons’ international reach, a big draw for clients, too.
