In 2013 McKenna Long & Aldridge’s government contracts team helped torpedo their firm’s proposed merger with Dentons. Now, on their second try, the two firms are set to combine forces—but not with much of McKenna Long’s government contracts group on board.

On May 1, Covington & Burling announced that it had picked up the heart of McKenna Long’s government contracts practice in an acquisition of 19 lawyers, including five partners. Frederic Levy will be the group’s cochair at Covington. The move strips away much of McKenna Long’s government contracts practice in Washington—a department that for many years was one of the largest, oldest and most prestigious among its peers.
