Winston & Strawn to Open in Taipei
Winston & Strawn is planning to open an office in Taipei.
No partners will be resident in the office, which is expected to open in March or April. The partner in charge of the office will be John Alison, who will remain in the firm’s Washington D.C. office. D.C. partners Thomas Jarvis and Vivian Kuo will also handle Taiwan matters.
A Hong Kong-based spokeswoman for the firm said the new office will be staffed by associates but she said she did not know if these would be locally hired or relocated from the U.S.
Those international firms with offices in Taipei focus on intellectual property matters. Alison, a patent litigator, joined Winston & Strawn in August from IP firm Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner. He previously spent 19 years as a partner in the Taipei office of Finnegan Henderson.
Jarvis moved to Winston & Strawn from Finnegan Henderson with Alison. Kuo was a partner with now-defunct Howrey before joining Winston & Strawn in 2011.
The Chicago-based firm currently has three Asian offices in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai with about 30 lawyers. Globally the firm has 850 lawyers in 17 offices.
