Typically, I prefer to say what I’m about to say one-on-one, when you can hear from my tone of voice that I’m not trying to be preachy or patronizing. But our newsroom has had several incidents in the past month that make me think it’s a good idea to discuss the rules of the reporter-PR specialist relationship in a wider forum.

I’ve met many top-notch public relations professionals (aka media specialists, PR specialists, media relations experts). Those who serve law firms best expedite our access to firm leaders, newsmaking lawyers and others that our reporters and editors need to talk with to cover the business of law. We strive to be nuanced, deep and truthful in our reporting of firms and their lawyers because that’s what our readers need from us to better do their jobs.
