Barton Winokur is a generalist. The Philadelphia native joined hometown firm Dechert Price & Rhoads in 1965—building a mergers and leveraged buyout–heavy practice—before taking the firm’s helm in 1996. It’s deal work that he returned to full-time in 2011, after stepping down as Dechert’s chairman and CEO.

But Winokur’s practice has at times comprised dispute resolution, tax, securities, real estate, international trade, sports law, private equity, corporate law, and bankruptcy work. “My legal career hasn’t been about a [specific] practice. It has been about dealing with difficult and interesting problems,” Winokur says.
