During the first week of June, Minnesota attorney Jeffrey Anderson visited five cities–Chicago; Kansas City, Missouri; St. Joseph, Missouri; Crookston, Minnesota; and Milwaukee (twice)—held a couple of press conferences, and filed two federal lawsuits against the Roman Catholic Church. It’s a typical schedule for Anderson.
Some critics have called him a self-promoting gadfly, chasing money and fame, but he is arguably the most successful lawyer challenging the church. Since 1983, Anderson, backed by his seven-lawyer St. Paul firm, has filed thousands of suits on behalf of people who say they’ve been sexually abused by Catholic priests and bishops. And he’s the only lawyer who’s gunning for the top, suing the Vatican and the Pope in sex abuse suits.
