Clifford Chance has announced plans to relocate Matthew Newick, its London-based head of banking litigation to Hong Kong.
The move comes less than two months after Martin Rogers, the former head of Clifford Chance’s Asia Pacific disputes practice and co-head of its regional financial regulatory practice, and litigation partner James Wadham announced they would be leaving to joing U.S. firm Davis Polk & Wardwell, for whom they will launch a Hong Kong litigation practice.
In a statement, Clifford Chance said Newick, a 22-year veteran of the firm, would arrive in Hong Kong by summer. The firm stressed Newick’s experience with a number of international regulators, exchanges and prosecuting institutions, including the Hong Kong Securities & Futures Commission, and domestic courts such as the Hong Kong Court of First Instance and Court of Appeal.
Rogers was regarded as one of the leading financial regulatory lawyers in Hong Kong. His recruitment by Davis Polk and relatively swift replacement by Clifford Chance indicate that international firms are expecting significant growth in the practice area.
Newick began his career at New Zealand's Chapman Tripp in 1987 and joined Clifford Chance’s London office four years later. He became a partner at the firm in 1999.
